Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome

As cells become increasingly resistant to the influence of insulin, blood sugars, as well as many other cardiovascular risk factors, begin to rise.  Blood flow is compromised as sugar molecules (glucose) attach to the lining of small blood vessels and organ function begins to fail.

A problem exists in that conventional therapies do little to stop the progression of this disease and prevent the long term complications and early mortality of most diabetics.  For type II diabetics oral hypoglycemic dosing is typically increased, with conversion to insulin dosing as blood sugar regulation, and the forces driving it become more and more out of control.

Guidelines put forth by the ADA provide no meaningful way of preventing the long term complications of diabetes either.

Much of what Dr. Harris does in working with diabetic patients is based on the work of Richard Bernstein, MD.

Dr. Bernstein was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of twelve, and as a adult, took the initiative to completely turn the fate of his diagnosis around 180 degrees.

This didin't occur until well into his adult life, working as a industrial exucutive, when it became clear to him that the road of convetional care would lead him to an early fate of crippling disability and death.  In 1978 he entered medical school and in 1983 opened his own medical practice treating diabetic patients exclusively.  His most recent book is Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution (2nd Edition).

Dr. Harris addresses the primary underlying elements that foster a pattern of insulin resistance.  Those are:
  • A genetic intolerance of carbohydrates
  • Underlying inflammation and immune system dysregulation affecting hormonal (cortisol) and blood sugar balance.  Addressing these issues will improve health on many levels aside from improving blood sugar regulation.
